Why You Need Text-to-Speech eBook Summary
Last week, our partner ReadSpeaker released an interesting eBook on why you need Text-to-Speech technology. In addition to listing out some of the well-known advantages of text-to-speech, they also presented some eye-opening statistics that help us gain a better idea of the speech technology market today.
We recommend this eBook to anyone interested in using text-to-speech in their product or application. Below, we’ve summarized the main points and threw in some of our own insights.
So without further ado, here are the reasons why any developer needs to incorporate text-to-speech into their solutions.
Increase the size of your audience
Regardless of the purpose of your application, incorporating text-to-speech functionality into it is going to increase the size of your audience. Most people know that already. However, developers tend to underestimate just how much your reach can be extended with text-to-speech.
Accessibility is a big benefit of text-to-speech. People with vision, reading, or language disabilities rely on text-to-speech when using applications or devices. It enables them to consume information that they weren’t able to consume before.
But text-to-speech is going to do more than just extend your reach to the accessibility market. It’s going to extend your reach to just about everyone in the world.
Think about it, we’re always trying to find the easiest way to do things. Whether it’s a complex task such as compiling a financial report or something simple such as reading the news, people always try to find the easiest way to get it done.
Text-to-speech technology makes using devices and applications more convenient for everybody. It allows users to listen to content, as opposed to just reading it. This makes accessing digital content easier and is a well-known benefit of text-to-speech.
Accessibility is in higher demand than you think
Speaking of accessibility, people also tend to underestimate just how many people are looking for applications with accessibility features.
Is the US, 43% of adults are at or below the basic level of reading proficiency. Worldwide, that number is higher. Also, 15-20% of the worldwide population has some form of language-based learning disability.
These numbers show that a high number of people not only benefit from text-to-speech, but may also require it. Without text-to-speech, a large number of people are unable to use your device or application.
You need text-to-speech because there are so many people in the world who would rely on it. Not to mention, increasing the size of your audience is nice too.
The world is changing, and demand for text-to-speech is growing
The demand for secondary language education has never been higher. The world isn’t quite as big as it used to be, in terms of traveling and moving that is. It’s much easier to move across the world today, and people are migrating at a much higher rate.
The biggest stat here is that 244 million people across the globe are foreign born. In 2000, that number was only 70 million.
The number of foreign born migrants has more than tripled in the last 16 years. Migrants often move to a country with a new language, requiring them to learn the new language quickly.
Text-to-speech has been used heavily in eLearning software in recent years, especially in language development courses. Text-to-speech is great for simulating conversations and teaching users how to correctly pronounce certain words.
The growing elderly population depends on technology
The worldwide population is getting older, and more seniors are using the internet than you think.
In the US, 59 percent of senior citizens use the internet. Most of them access it daily. Today, 900 million people worldwide are over 60 years old and by 2030 that number is expected to rise to 1.4 billion.
The population is indeed getting older, and it’s important to note that they already use technology quite a bit. Text-to-speech is great for older people as it helps them navigate the digital world and give them the information they’re looking for. Text-to-speech is commonly used for giving tutorials and for screen reading applications.
Web-based solutions are easy to implement
If you’re a provider of digital content, whether it’s a news website or a blog, pay attention here. Web-based text-to-speech solutions can save you a lot of time and headaches.
You don’t need to download any software to effectively integrate text-to-speech technology into your website. In fact, it can be as easy as inserting a few lines of code. Doing this allows any text on your website to be read aloud by a text-to-speech voice. Once it’s implemented, all your visitors would have to do is click a button to have the text read to them.
This is great for accessibility purposes, which we’ve talked about in one of our previous points. But this is also great for people who access your content through mobile devices, which we cover next.
People are going mobile
An increasing share of time spent on digital media is on mobile devices. Let’s take a look at the amount of time US adults spent per day accessing digital media over the last few years.
In 2008, US adults spent on average 2.7 hours daily accessing digital media. 2.2 of those hours were spent on desktop computers and laptops, while only 0.3 hours were spent on mobile devices.
In 2015, US adults were spending 5.6 hours using digital media daily, which is more than double what it was in 2008. However, only 2.4 of those hours were on desktop/laptop computers, a minor increase. Mobile devices, on the other hand, were used on average 2.8 hours daily in 2015. That’s a significant amount of growth in a short period of time.
Mobile devices are now used more than desktop and laptop computers to access digital media. This is great news for text-to-speech because the mobile device market is always looking for convenience. As we mentioned, text-to-speech is a powerful tool in making digital content easier to access.
